International Day of Play

Lego

Play comes naturally to every child. It is a biological and cognitive necessity – but not every child has the right to play or enjoy its benefits. The need to support children’s right to play is more urgent now than ever, including for children experiencing crisis.

The Big Idea

A group of organisations led by The LEGO Group and The LEGO Foundation joined together to call for the UN Member States to adopt a Resolution at the UN General Assembly to create an International Day of Play. One day each year, we will raise the profile of the power of play and awareness of the need to respect, fulfil, and protect every child's right to play.

Culture Impact

The successful adoption at the United Nations General Assembly was co-sponsored by an impressive 140 out of 193 member states.

20x global organisations including The LEGO Group’s competitors in the toy sector, came together to drive forward the play movement, as Founding Members.

The inaugural day on June 11th had a huge global launch, with digital and IRL activations for children and adults around the world.
